Feeding your gecko with the right food is important to maintain the health of your pet. Like humans, geckos also need a good diet to stay healthy. They are naturally found in the central Asia and South Africa.

About Geckos

Interesting things about Geckos is that they have eyelids, are reptiles and are actually a non-aggressive animal for their owners as they will never harm you. Caring for your pet gecko isn’t much difficult either, but if you are a new owner of a gecko, then, you need a bit more information on what geckos eat and how you can care for them. The most important thing that you need to do is taking care of their feeding.

It may surprise you, they are carnivores

Geckos, as cute and harmless as they look, are actually carnivores as they eat other animals like insects or worms. The main food for your gecko should be crickets, waxworms, locusts, silkworms and mealworms. The number of worms or insects that your gecko eat in one night varies. It’s important for you to know that, if your gecko is young, then they need to feed everyday while an adult gecko will need to feed every other day. The amount of worms that the gecko will eat also varies depending on their growth stage. An adult gecko can eat about 4 to 10 crickets while, on the other hand, a young gecko will eat 3 to five worms daily.

Best way to feed them

If your gecko is feeding on crickets, then do remember that the crickets should be young and small in size. Another thing that you need to do is to prepare the food for the gecko. Let’s say your leopard gecko is feeding on crickets, whether they are young leopards or an adult, it would be best if you can add some calcium dust on your crickets. It will provide some nutrients plus your geckos will love it. You may get crickets easily from the pet store. Another good food for the gecko is mealworms. Actually, mealworms are much easier to manage than any other types of food like crickets. There are a couple of other worms too such as waxworms and earthworms that you can use to feed your leopard gecko as well. The same goes for other types of pet geckos too like the green gecko.

Wild geckos: their natural, preferred food

Wild geckos that are found living in their natural habitats are used to catching their prey for themselves and they usually refuse to eat any dead worms or insects. It is also common to find an adult gecko to eat baby cockroaches and fruit flies while young geckos eat a small amount of worms, insects, and locusts.
